A Brief History

Bishop Hill is the site of a Swedish communal society established in 1846. A dedicated hospital building was built in 1855 at the current site, just one block west of the Colony Park. It overlooked the colony orchards to the west of the property.

The Colony Hospital is a 2½ story wood structure built in the Greek Revival architectural style. The two large back porticos were built to provide scenic views and plenty of fresh air for the patients.

Guest rooms are named after Bishop Hill Colony doctors and leaders. As an original surviving Colony building, The Colony Hospital is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. It has been a bed and breakfast since 1996.

Meet Your Innkeepers

In July 2003, Lowell and Judith Gilbert bought The Colony Hospital Bed and Breakfast when they wanted to escape big city life permanently. “The unspoiled charm and European quaintness of this tiny rural village of Bishop Hill was very appealing to both of us,” explains Judith.

This year, their daughter Elspeth, has joined them and taken over as head innkeeper. Elspeth’s pet dog, Lily, also lives at the B&B. “Our guests have been the absolute best! They have become such a blessing in our lives for which we are so grateful!” stated Judith.

Library
Guests are welcome to relax, read or visit in our comfy and inviting library. There is a varied selection of books (spiritual, inspirational, novels and biographical) including Judith’s “alternative healing library” in the antique secretary. Playing cards and games are also located in the library. This room is the perfect gathering place for groups staying at the inn. During the cooler weather and winter months, the woodburning stove adds cozy warmth for guests to unwind and recharge. “Just what the doctor ordered.”

Back Portico
Take the time to rock in our relaxing rockers on our famous back porch or watch our beautiful country sunsets or stargaze into the pitch-black night. The back portico is the ideal place for quiet morning reflection or afternoon wine or drinks. Great place to meet your fellow travelers! The Anders Bergland Suite has its own private screened-in porch on the second floor. It is the best view in all the village for watching exquisite sunsets over the rolling fields.
